Best known for his work as lead guitarist for
Brainbox and Dutch art rockers Focus (see separate entry), in his solo
endeavors Jan Akkerman has pursued a mix of modern, medieval, and classical
styles. In contrast, his 1977 collaboration with former Brainbox vocalist
Kaz Lux (Akkerman was also in Brainbox prior to joining Focus), featured a return
to a more conventional rock formula. Showcasing original material, "Eli"
highlighted Lux's unique Dutch "soul" vocal stylings and
Akkerman's instantly identifiable razor-edged guitar leads. Hardly
awe-inspiring, Akkerman's static guitar was nice; Lux wasn't half bad, and
a couple of the tunes, including the title track and "Guardian
Angel" proved entertaining rockers. Hardly something you'd drop
everything to pursue, but one of Akkerman's more mainstream outings ...
