I'll be the first to admit that I get multi-instrumentalist Andy Bown confused with Alan Bown.

I do know 1972's "Gone To My Head" is Bown's post The Herd solo debut and that it's surprisingly good.  Produced by Jimmy Horowitz and backed by former Herd cohort Peter Frampton (along with Lesley Duncan), the album showcases Bown as a surprisingly accomplished writer and singer with an ear for melodic and commercial material.  Bown's at his best on uptempo numbers such as the rocking title track, 'P.S. Get Lost' and 'Pale Shadow (of His Former Self)'.  Had he focused on those, this one have been a killer debut.  Unfortunately, roughly half of the set features slower material.  Taken individually tracks such as 'The Mourning Leaves' and 'Open Your Eyes' aren't bad, but the effect starts to become numbing by the time you're half way through the second side.  In case you care, Mercury tapped the album for two singles, though neither did anything commercially:

- 1972's 'Pale Shadow (of His Former Self)' b/w 'Pale Shadow (of His Former Self)' (Mercury catalog number DJ344)

- 1972's 'Open Your Eyes' b/w 'Oh, James' (Mercury catalog number 73282)
