Mike Peters started his musical career in the Welch punk outfit The Toilets (great name).  When The Toilets collapsed, Peters and drummer Nigel Buckle (aka Nigel Twist) continued their collaboration in the band Seventeen.  With Peters switching to bass, Seventeen was rounded out by guitarists Eddie MacDonald and David Sharp.  By 1981 the four decided they needed to refine their image.  Adopting a new nameplate 'The Alarm', they relocated to London where they released a self-financed single 'Unsafe Buildings' b/w 'Up for Murder' ().  While the single did little commercially, it attracted the attention of IRS Records, which promptly signed them to a contract.  Their label debut 'Marching On' b/w 'Lie of the Land' (IRS catalog number ILS-0032) attracted quite a bit of attention, as did the follow-up 'The Stand' b/w 'Reason 41' (IRS catalog number IR-9922) and an opening slot for U2 on their 1983 "War" tour.

Released the same year, the cleverly titled "The Alarm" served as the group's American debut.  A five track EP, the set compiled the band's second and third singles, with the addition of the live selection 'For Freedom'.  Critics were less than kind to the band (actually they've savaged pretty much everything these guys have done), but to my ears their debut EP is as good as early U2.  While they may not be the era's most original writers, on material such as 'The Stand' and 'Marching On' MacDonald and Peters demonstrated they knew how to craft a catchy melody and slap on a socially relevant lyric.
