Co-produced by Peter Shertser and Ian Sippen, 1969's cleverly-titled "Clark-Hutchinson" isn't going to be for everyone.  Let me modify that to say this album isn't going to strike a chord with most folks.  Reportedly completed  during two 12 hours recording sessions, the five track, all instrumental set served as a showcase for Hutchinson's pretty amazing guitar moves.  I've seen numerous high price dealer lists describe material such as 'Improvisation On a Modal Scale' and 'Acapulco Gold' as being progressive or psychedelic, but you'll be better served if you picture something with classical, Spanish-flamenco and Indian raga influences.  Imagine Jan Akkerman and Focus, or maybe Mike Oldfield after a six month vacation in the Costa del Sol and you'll get a feel for the album's sound.  Clearly that won't appeal to everyone and I'll readily admit the first time I played the album, it didn't do much for me.  Luckily I gave it a couple of spins which began to reveal the set's charms to me.  Full of squealing lead guitar and ominous background vocals, 'Impromptu In 'E' Minor' sounds like something dropped from 'The Exorcist' soundtrack. Folks who enjoy an Eastern flavor to their progressive diet will probably get a kick out of the 13 minute closer ''Improvisation On an Indian Scale.  Clocking in at over 50 minutes (!!!), this is also one of the longest albums I've ever heard.

Released by the Nova label in the UK, the collection was actually a top-1o album throughout England, but did nothing in the States.
