As a big Temptations fan I'd love to tell you that Dennis Edwards' 1984 solo debut was killer.  It could have been, but fell victim to then popular tastes which leave it as a significant disappointment.

Having spent 25 years on and off with The Temptations (he was brought into the group in 1968 as a replacement for the always temperamental David Ruffin), in 1983 Edwards finally struck out in pursuit of solo career.  (Ironically Edwards had actually recorded a album in the mid-1970s but Motown refused to release it.)  Produced by Dennis Lambert, 1983's "Don't Look Any Further" served to showcase Edwards' nifty voice.  Gruff and gospel influenced, he may have been The Temptations second best lead (in my book the honor of best going to Ruffin).  Edwards voice was in fine form throughout the collection, but Lambert's selection of covers and dated arrangements (syndrums, synthesizers, screechy backing singers), left the album with an extremely dated sound.  Add to that the principals apparently couldn't decide whether to cast Edwards as a Barry White-styled love man ('Another Place In Time'), or as a dance act ('Shake Hands (Come Out Dancin')'). To a large extent that strategy ignored Edwards' strengths and anyone lookin' for something in the classic Temps mode was likely to be bitterly disappointed.  Mind you, Edwards was too talented to turn in a complete turkey and his title track duet with Siedah Garrett was pretty hot.  Unfortunately that was the exception with tracks like '(You're My) Aphrodisiac', 'Can't Fight It' and 'Just Like You' being instantly forgettable.  Elsewhere Gordy tapped the album for a series of singles:

- 'Don't Look Any Further' b/w 'I Thought I Could Handle It (Gordy catalog number 1334)

- '(You're My) Aphrodisiac' b/w 'Shake Hands (Come Out Dancin')' (Gordy catalog number 1374)

- 'Another Place In Time' b/w ''Let's Go (Gordy catalog number 1755)

I also found a YouTube clip of Edwards performing '(You're My) Aphrodisiac':  It's kind of a dated video clip, but fun in a tacky '80s style:
