On the heels of Pink Floyd's massive mid-1970's successes (see separate entry), guitarist David Gilmour used a break in the band's schedule to strike out in pursuit of a solo career. Signed to Columbia (coincidently Floyd's label), Gilmour's self-titled 1978 debut teamed him with bassist Rick Willis and drummer Willie Wilson on an eclectic collection ranging from Floyd-styled instrumentals ('Milhas'), straight-ahead rock ('There's No Way Out of Here'), to experimental jazz ('It's Deafinetly'). Throughout, Gilmour showed himself to be a capable vocalist and an excellent guitarist; his unique icy static playing merely underscoring the Floyd comparison. Although hardly top-40 radio fodder, the results made for a rather impressive debut and Floyd fans purchased "David Gilmour" in droves, quickly pushing it to # 29 on the US charts. (The album was originally released with a gatefold sleeve.)

Co-produced by Bob Erzin and Gilmour, 1984's "About Face" was recorded amidst personal and professional upheavals.  Not only was Gilmour trying to deal with a crumbling marriage, but in the wake of the release of Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut" long-simmering personal and artistic disagreements with Roger Waters broke out in the public domain (wonder what 'You Know I'm Right' was about ...).  Needless to say, Gilmour had lots of material to dwell.  Interestingly, against that backdrop Gilmour elected to take make some major changes to his patented sound.  With backing from Steve Winwood, Toto's Jeff Pocarao and members of Paul Young's band, tracks like 'Until We Sleep' and 'All Lovers Are Deranged' were far more commercial than anything in the Pink Floyd catalog, or even Gilmour's debut solo album.  I'll readily admit to be a sucker for a good pop song, but hearing Gilmour's instantly recognizable voice bopping along to a pseudo disco-ish number like 'Blue Light' was simply a real shock.  Luckily he didn't complete abandon is Floydian roots.  'Murder', 'Out of the Blue' and 'Near the End' featured all of the characteristics that Floyd fans wanted to hear and coincidently also provided the album's highlights.  Anyone know what 'Cruise' was about?   (In case anyone cared, Pete Townshend shared writing credits on 'Love On the Air' and 'All Lovers Are Deranged').  Columbia tapped the album for a pair of singles, though neither exactly burned up the charts:

- 'Blue Light' b/w 'Cruise' (Columbia catalog number 38-04378)

- 'Love On the Air' b/w 'Near the End' (Columbia catalog number 38-04490)
