Co-produced by John Alcock and Steve Hackett, 1979's "Spectral Mornings" found Hackett returning to a full band format.  Hackett's third solo LP, finds the artist having apparently decided to play the musical middle ground, offering up a mix of progressive oriented instrumentals and more conventional pop/rock songs.  At least in theory that would seem to be a blend ensuring that neither side of his fan base would be happy, but the results are actually surprisingly engaging, making for his most diverse and engaging album.  As on the previous LP, Hackett turns the vocals over to someone else.  In this case Peter Hicks.  The one exception is Hackett's vocal on the weird "The Ballad of the Decomposing Man").  So what's here?  The leadoff "Every Day" is a nice rocker.  Sporting some gorgeous vocal harmonies and beautiful flute work from John Hackett, "The Virgin and the Gypsy" is a pretty folk-rock number. With an oriental sheen the instrumental "The Red Flower of Tachai Blooms Everywhere",  the Genesis-styled "Clocks - The Angel of Mons" and "Lost Time In Cordoba" were all more progressive oriented numbers allowing Hackett to showcase his more adventuresome sides.  To our ears, the only disappointment is the English music hall--styled "The Ballad of the Decomposing Man" .  All told, one of our favorite Hackett solo efforts ...
