Co-produced by the Mandrill and Macolm Cecil, the band's 1975 debut for United Artists was typically eclectic.  Among the genres they touched on, "Beast from the East" managed to incorporate everything from George Clinton-styled funk ('Livin' It Up') straight ahead disco ('Disco Lypso'), lite MOR jazz ('Peaceful Atmosphere') and even Latin rock influences ('Ratchet (Como se va la Cosa)'). To my ears the band sounds tired and uninspired, as if the constant label changes and personnel shake ups had finally begun to take their toll on creativity and cohesiveness.  Perhaps that's why a disproportionate number of tracks sound like throwaways ('Disco Lypso', the lame Caribbean-flavored 'Panama' and the voicebox propelled slice of funk 'Dirty Ole Man').  Still, taken in small doses the album actually wasn't half bad, but trying to digest it in a single sitting was difficult.
