Okay, I feel the need to explain why this album is here ...  I'll readily admit that Tom Scholtz and Boston are a guilty pleasure to my ear and in 1984 this was the closest you could get to a Boston album.

The brainchild of former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau (who at the time was engaged in a nasty legal fight with Tom Scholtz), 1984's self-produced "Orion the Hunter" provides a pretty good approximation to the patented Boston sound.  Part of the resemblance has to do with the fact singer Fran Cosmo was a dead ringer for Brad Delp's yelp of a voice.  In fact, Delp co-wrote quite a bit of the material and provided backing vocals on at least three of the tracks.  (Cementing the relationship between the bands, Cosmo went on to eventually replace Delp in Boston.)  So what about the music?  Well, exemplified by tracks such as 'All Those Years'', 'Dreamin'' and 'Dark and Stormy' this was prime form 1980s AOR.  If there was such a thing as a formula for top-40 AOR, then these guys had it down pat.  Whatever artistic shortcomings the album may have displayed were largely overridden by it's commercial success.  Propelled by a top-10 single with 'So You Ran' b/w 'Fast Talk' (Portrait catalog number 37-04483) and a tour opening for Aerosmith, the only surprise was that the group called it quits before they could release something along the lines of "Orion the Hunter Returns".  (For hardcore fans, Portrait also tapped 'Joanne' b/w 'All Those Years' (Portrait catalog number 37-04571) as a follow-up single.)
