I stumbled across this one at a Rehoboth Beach CD store.  It looked totally forlorn amidst a pile of about 100 LPs; 99% which were MOR crap.  Never having heard of The Sorts, I figured I could take a chance given the dollar price tag.

I can't give you much in the way of bibliographic information other than the band consisted of Chris Farrall, Stuart Fletcher, and Joshua LaRue.  Their album was released on the small Slowdime label with Geoff Turner producing.  Judging by the back cover picture of the trio I wasn't sure what to expect.  Looking like your typical set of anguished suburban teenagers (LaRue looked a little older), I was thinking ska, or something hardcore.  Regardless, I was wrong.  Instead most of 1997's "More There" was reflective rock.  With a basic bass, guitar, drums line up tracks like 'Count Me In', 'Slow Camera' and 'Simply Speaking' sounded like a weird hybrid of early Police, R.E.M. and The B-52s.  Yeah, I know that's a terrible description and doesn't provide much of a baseline for comparison ...  Still, imagine Andy Summers chunky guitar set with Michael Stipe singing B-52s-styled lyrics ('Bowie Knife').  Sure, the set wasn't perfect with too many instrumentals which had the effect of giving the LP a feel like they'd simply run out of creative energy.  Hard to tell you why, but there was something beguiling about the album.  It's one of the few in my collection I've bothered to put on CD.  I'd love to know more about these guys.
