Released a full decade after "Kaptain Kopter", 1982's "Euro-American" didn't even see an American release.  Co-produced by California and Steven Sollars the collection was divided into hard rock (American) and pop (Euro) sides (for some reason the sides are opposite of what the title would have you expect).  At least to my ears, the album has a somewhat schizophrenic feel to it.  In spite of uncredited support from most of the Spirit line-up (Mark Andes, Ed Cassidy, Jay Ferguson and John Locke), most of the album's rather flat and uninspired.  The American side is rather conventional hard rock, mired in a muddy mix and lacking much in the way of memorable melodies.  Even California's guitar is strangely subdued.  The Euro side found California turning in a couple of decent efforts ('Mon Ami', 'Rude Reaction' and 'Calling You'), but for the most part he simply didn't sound particularly engaged or interested in his surroundings.

Sadly California died in a tragic January 1997 accident.  While swimming in Hawaii, he got caught in a riptide and drown (though he managed to save his 12 year old son).
