Funny, but I'm old enough to remember the massive promotional campaign Epic Records launched for the Nu Disk product. Born in the brief heyday of enthusiasm American labels had for punk and new wave acts, the hope was that the EP format (which had long been a mainstay of the European market), would finally catch on with American audiences. Technically speaking these weren't EPs which were usually issued as 7", 45 rpm format. Instead Epic bet on a 10" format that played at 33 rpm.
First off, I haven't heard all of the Nu Disk offerings, but with the possible exception of The Clash release ("Black Market Clash"), "Found All the Parts" is probably the favorite one I've heard. Produced by the band, the set featured two previously unreleased studio numbers and two supposed live tracks, though at least one of them ('Day Tripper') was a studio cut that had audience sound effects slapped on top of it.
- Even though billed as a live performance, their cover of The Beatles 'Day Tripper' was actually a studio take with live audience noises added in post-production. For what it was worth, their studio version was pretty enthusiastic so you can overlook the deception. Would have been interesting to hear the real live track since it was part of their concert act. rating: **** 4 stars - A nice mid-tempo rocker showcasing Nielsen's crushing lead guitar and Pettersen's pounding bass (he's far better than critics admit), 'Can't Hold On' was recorded at the band's famed 1978 Budokan concert. Though dropped of the "Live At Budokan" set, it subsequently made the "Budokan II" and "At Budokan: The Complete Concert" collections. rating: *** 3 stars - An instantly recognizable slice of Cheap Trick power pop, 'Such a Good Girl' sounded like something the band would have recorded early in their career. My favorite of the four. rating: **** 3 stars - Co-written by Nielsen and Zander, the ballad 'Take Me I'm Yours' has always made me laugh. The song itself was a pretty ballad (reportedly an outtake from the "In Color" sessions), but Zander's clipped delivery sounded like he was trying to channel Brian Ferry and Roxy Music. rating: *** 3 stars
Original packages included a bonus promo 7" single 'Everything Works If You Let It' (Epic catalog number AE-1206).
A nice and enjoyable package, but unless you happened to be a hardcore Cheap Trick fan, this one probably isn't an essential addition to your collection. The four tracks were subsequently repackaged as part of the 2006 re-release of the "All Shook Up" album.
