Bob Dylan cover LPs are literally a rite of passage for rock artists with some of the biggest names in the business having succumbed to the desire/need to record one ... The Byrds, Judy Collins, Bryan Ferry, Steve Gibbons, The Hollies, est., etc. ... the list seemingly goes on and on. That said, 1972's "Lo and Behold" is probably the best of the lot and also one of the least known ...
Following the collapse of McGuinness Flint mark one (Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle having elected to head off on their own), drummer Hughie Flint and singer/guitarist Tom McGuinness hooked up with singer/guitarist Dennis Coulson and bassist Dixie Dean to form the cleverly titled Coulson, Dean, McGuinness, Flint. Released by DJM (Sire acquiring American distribution rights), their debut album found the quartet taking on a series of ten Dylan compositions, most little known Dylan compositions. Elsewhere 'Sign of the Cross' and 'Get Your rocks Off'' were previously unreleased "Basement Tapes" songs. Co-produced by the band and Manfred Mann (McGuinness had previously been a member of Manfred Mann's band), the results were almost magical. Powered by Coulson's rustic voice, these guys came off as an British version of The Band, albeit with a more commercial knack. Virtually everyone of the ten tracks were worth hearing making it hard to come up with favorites. If pressured I'd go with:
# 1 - 'Lo and Behold' - imagine The Faces doing a highly commercial Dylan number at their most carefree (as opposed to when they were trying to play while falling down drunk). # 2 - 'Let Me Die In My Footsteps' - Hum, perhaps because of the Indian percussion (tablas) and rhythms this one's always reminded me of Roger McGuinn doing a Dylan after spending a month cleansing his spirit in India. # 3 - 'Open the Door Henry' - The most commercial tune on the LP ...
I'm not big on hyperbole, but this is truly one of those lost mid-1970s rock classics. And the damn thing is still affordable too boot ...

Sire released the US version with different cover art - they slapped the UK LP inner sleeve group photo as the new cover (Sire catalog number SAS-7405). Sire managed to misspell McGuinness' name as 'McGuiness'.
