How many of you knew that comedian Dick Gregory had run for President in 1968?
Recorded at a
March 1969 performance at Southampton College, "Dick
Gregory: The Light Side: The Dark Side" isn't exactly
the funniest album you've ever heard. A highly political set, the
collection found Gregory reflecting on a broad spectrum of political, morale
and social issues. I'd only seen brief clips of Gregory and I have to
tell you that he on monologs like 'Young Moral Dedication', 'Moral Gap' and
'Assassinations' he came off as a surprisingly thoughtful and insightful
guy. Mind you, Gregory could be quite funny (check out his Santa Claus
story and the 'titty watcher' segment). Perhaps even funnier is
listening to the upper class, white liberal college audience trying to
figure out how to respond to Gregory's raps. Still, stretched over two
LPs and clocking in at almost and hour and a half, the collection would have
benefited from a bit of editing. 1.) Introduction - 0:44 2.) Black Progressive (Dick Gregory) - 4:05 3.) Young Moral Dedication (Dick Gregory) - 6:35 4.) Moral Gap (Dick Gregory) - 15:12
