I'll be honest and tell you that I'm not the world's biggest Doors fans and know even less about guitarist Robbie Krieger and the other band survivors' solo catalogs.
That said, I
believe 1977's "Robbie Krieger and Friends"
is Krieger's first true solo debut. Self-produced, the set's quite
different from anything Kreiger had done before. Anyone expecting to hear
Doors-styled rock, or even Butts Band-styled boogie moves is going to be in
for a major surprise. Exemplified by material such as 'Gumpopper',
'Uptown'
and 'Every Day',
the ten largely instrumental tracks find Krieger and company turning in a
set of competent, but largely uninspired light funk and jazz. There are
certainly flashes of Kreiger's blazing guitar (check out 'The Ally'), but
for the most part he simply blends into the background. Kind in
interesting to note that the set was released by Blue Note Records which is
better known for it's jazz catalog). 1.) Gumpopper (instrumental) (Sal Marquez - Robbie Krieger) - 2.) Uptown (instrumental) (Robbie Krieger) - 3:54 3.) Every Day (instrumental) (Robbie Krieger) - 5:04 4.) Marylin Monroe (Robbie Krieger) - 4:55
(side
2) 2.) Low Bottomy (instrumental) (Robbie Krieger) - 2:58 3.) Spare Changes (instrumental) (Robbie Krieger) - 3:38 4.) Big Oak Basin (instrumental) (G. Barone) - 4:55
