Ah shades of Motown's Motor City Motorcade !!!
"Live Stiffs" captured the cream of the English label's mid-'70s recording roster during an English University tour (dates at the University of East Anglia and University Lyceum London). In terms of who these guys are, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe are fairly well known in the States; Ian Dury and Wreckless Eric less so. Larry Wallis' a complete unknown (who
incidently turns in one of the better performances with his "Police Car"). What else is there to say? Lowe's two contributions are suitably
energetic, including the previously unreleased "Let's Eat". Eric's pair are forgettable. Costello's "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself " is the dullest of the lot (though he redeems himself with the rocking "Miracle Man"). Dury's rocks out, but is simply too English for most American listeners (anyone out there have a clue as to what "Billericay Dickie" is about?). Best track is the group's closing collaboration on Dury's "Sex Drugs Rock & Roll Chaos". Our copy's pressed on clear blue vinyl - drove our record player's tracking laser crazy.
