Jim Messina has one of those pedigrees most people would kill for - member of Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins and Messina; in-demand producer, talented artist, etc.
That
background makes 1979's self-produced "Oasis"
all the more disappointing. Technically there's nothing wrong with
these eight tracks. Messina's instantly recognizable voice is in fine
shape and the performances are technically immaculate. Unfortunately,
the set's overwhelming MOR feel is simply deadening. Tracks such as
'New and Different Way', 'Seeing You (For the First Time)' and 'Free To Be
Me' seldom rise above lite jazz muzak status. Slogging through the set
made me long to hear some of his Poco-styled country rock, or even his
Loggins & Messina pop-oriented catalog. One of the few albums
we've awarded a one star designation. Geez, I can't even pick a
favorite song on this set!
