Continuing her corporate wanderings, 1974's
cleverly-titled "Tracy Nelson"
found Nelson signed to Atlantic. Produced by Bob Johnston, lots of
folks seem to think this is one of her better offerings. To our ears
the set has its moments, but is hurt by Johnston's rather lush production
values (Nelson sounds a little tentative in places). The set's also
hurt by the inclusion of way too many languid ballads. Slower numbers
such as "Slow Fall" and "Love Has No Pride" may have
showcased Nelson's deep and sexy voice, but after a while you couldn't help
but wish she'd pick up the pace a bit. So what's worth hearing?
"Down So Low" has come to serve as Nelson's signature tune.
She also turns in a surprisingly impressive (and uptempo) cover of Bob
Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh (It Takes a Train to Cry)".
Elsewhere, "After the Fire" was a duet with Willie Nelson (Linda
Ronstadt provided backing vocals), which subsequently won Nelson a
Grammy.

Geez, another year, another record label for Tracy Nelson. This time around 1976's Jimmy Bowen produced "Time Is On My Side" found Nelson signed to MCA. Dedicated to Irma Thomas (good taste on Nelson's part), Nelson's deep and rich voice remained instantly recognizable. At least to our ears, the difference this time around is that Bowen deserved some credit for trying to lighten up the overall sound. Slow blues remained the predominant style, but "Anything You Want", "I've Never Loved You More" and "Couldn't Do Nothin' Right" were actually a little bit on the funky side. Perhaps not her best, or most consistent album, but it still made for a nice change of pace ...
