To my ears Poco albums are always frustrating. They're certainly a talented outfit and seem to effortlessly churn out quality country-rock. The problem I hear is that those aural nuggets are surrounded by so much chaff and filler.
Co-produced by the band and Mark Harman, 1976's "Rose of Cimarron" is a perfect example of their strengths and weaknesses. With Cotton and Young again responsible for the majority of the material, the focus remains on country-rock, though there's a noticeable shift away from country, to more of a pop-orientation. The title track (inspired by a female outlaw who rode with the Dalston gang) is a good example of the 'new' sound. Boasting a great melody (though the last couple of minutes of orchestration can be lost) and some wonderful vocals from all four members, it's a track that will stick in your head. I can still remember the first time I heard it on the radio. That said, I'll also tell you that Timothy B. Schmit's falsetto doesn't do much for me. So what else is worth hearing? Rusty Young's 'Stealaway' sports a nice rockish numbers. Young's 'Company's Comin'' is a country number, but is at least cute. Elsewhere, Paul Cotton's 'When You Come Around' was an old Illinois Speed Press track.
