Though he isn't anywhere as well known as such contemporaries as the late John Fahey, or Leo Kottke, guitarist Preston Reed is every bit as talented.  He's also a guy I don't know that much about which means this is a pretty short review.

I think 1984's "Playing By Ear" is Reed's second release and it's a true solo project with the man producing, writing all ten tracks and handling all of the instrumentation.  Musically tracks such as the title track, 'Southern Exposure' and the blazing 'Last Scene in September' are a showcase for Reed's finger picking style.  He's super agile and quite diverse, easily handling pretty ballads ('Moment Too Soon'), up tempo numbers ('Basta Pasta') and everything in between. That said, spread over a full album, to my ears the results start to sound similar.
