TEMPEST (Houston, TX)

"Tempest" 1979 (Earth Records)  [1]

This privately pressed hard rock record starts weakly, with a mediocre AOR song and a mediocre blues song, but gets much better. There are a few really hot hard rockers and quite a bit of variety in its almost 50-minute length. The only problem is that the male singer is terrible, and he’s given the album’s very best songs. The female singer, Barbara Pennington (not to be confused with the soul singer of the same name), has real blues strength to her voice but not much in the way of subtlety or nuance. This is a frustrating album, as a lot of talent shows through here but they obviously didn’t know what to do with it. The best songs (especially the two side-closers, which have really great hooks) could have been killers. What this band needed was a good producer or manager who would have made better decisions about who was singing and how. Strangely enough, this album was also released in Germany. (The German issue appears to have been intended for the entire European market). Its value is approximately 2/3 that of the US release. The US release has a white cover; the German release has a silver cover. [AM]

Not to be confused with the UK group of the same name, this band from the San Francisco Bay area is a contemporary Celtic-rock group comprising Norwegian-born singer/mandolinist Lief Sorbye (formerly of the traditional folk-music band Golden Bough) guitarist Rob Wullenjohn, fiddler (and occasional accordianist) Jon Berger, drummer Adolfo Lazlo, and bassist Ian Butler. They play some rocked-up versions of traditional tunes, but interpret them in very non-traditional ways, such as a version of "House Carpenter

After the breakup of Colosseum, Jon Hiseman (drums) tried it again, this time with a very young Allan Holdsworth on guitar. The result was a debut album of moderately interesting rock album with a somewhat heavy feel to it. Constipated may be the best description although somewhat harsh.
