If you've ever run across a tax scam release, there's a good chance it was a Guinness effort since this is the 

label that seems to have released the largest overall catalog of material.  In a two year period the label managed 

to release 64 documented albums. The number was probably significantly higher since there are major 

undocumented gaps in the Guinness catalog.  If you go by gaps in the catalog number sequences there are at 

least twenty missing releases.  The other thing that's funny is the near total absence of descriptive material on 

most Guinness releases.  I've looked and looked and with a handful of exceptions, you simply can't find reviews, 

or biographical information for Guinness releases - good luck finding something on titles like Mick Martin's 

"Thick Tongue Fool",  Ron Sparks' "Make Her Remember", let alone one of the rarer releases such as Upset's 

"Midsummer Night".   The catalog is all over the musical spectrum, including country, funk, jazz, pop, progressive 

rock, and soul moves.   As you'd expect with such a big listing, the caliber of material is also all over the map.  

Admittedly, much of the catalog is pretty awful so be careful before spending big bucks on a Guinness release.  

 

Also kind of funny, a Japanese company has begun reissuing some of the rarer Guinness catalog - Lift, both of 

the Newban LPs, Carlos Franzatti, etc.  At least to me the thought of someone bootlegging a taxscam release is 

an interesting concept.

 

Also, for what it's worth, this is the most comprehensive web-based listing of Guinness releases in that it 

includes cover scans for all of the known releases.  If you've got one that I'm missing, drop me a line.  This 

website also stands out for the album reviews.  Take them with a grain of salt, but you'll find capsule reviews 

for the Guinness LPs I own.  Simply click on the artist titles.  As an aside, several of those reviews now include

insights from band members themselves.  A recent addition is Lang Montgomery providing information on the 

band Wits End (aka Wit's End).
